Having seen numerous amounts of footage of Ellie Cocks performing on social media, we thought it was about time we caught up with her to see what she’s actually been up to. She’s worked hard for the position she now holds in the London scene which is rewarded with playing at some of the best parties across town.
We spoke with her to see what she’s recently been up to with her music recently, whats to come in the next following months for her music, how she got into the scene plus a bunch more of questions.
Let’s start with talking about your musical journey in the last 2 years… What’s changed?
Well, as some of you may know, I started of by having a small residency at Glamorous afterparty playing every Sunday nights/Monday mornings (after hours) & would sometimes get a really cool crowd coming over, mainly from Fabric once its finished to carry on the party! I like that crowd a lot. Thats one thing everyone knows with Vauxhall, the clubs never shut!
Then through this, I started getting gigs here, there and everywhere which I was so excited and happy about, so willing to take anything – I just wanted to play! I then started to realise that this was beginning to create problems for me, not having no exclusivity, attracting wrong crowds etc & just genuinely picking the right parties to play. At one point I thought it was all over and I remember crying to my mum about it all, so things had to change.
I stopped taking gigs that I thought would effect me and was really thinking of what will benefit my future and what won’t. I think its fair to say that Magna Carta changed it all for me! Through that I got a gig at London’s most exciting and talked about party, Abode at Studio 338. I am now an official resident for Abode & things are moving very quick for us as a team and the future is exciting! We have lots in the pipeline for 2016, we have We Are FSTVL presenting Do Not Sleep plus more which I’m not allowed to announce just yet!
Anything in the pipeline with your own productions?
In regards to my own productions, I’ve been in and out of studios with friends, engineers making some stuff here & there so am hoping to have some releases soon! Learning the software is a killer, I’m more the creative one!
Describe what your sound is when you’re performing to crowds?
The music I play is mainly Tech House. I like to build up my sets and go on a bit of a journey but in terms of playing to crowds, it depends what time your playing, who’s playing before you and the crowd itself. I would count myself lucky as I always play the music that I love and just wish for the crowd to like it too! Anything with a nice groove and a few double kicks, I’m happy!
How did you get yourself into DJing?
I used to work on the door for the party I gained my first residency at and good friend of mine used to play there and at the end of my shift I used to stand next to the DJ booth bugging him asking to always have a go! He knew at this time I was learning to mix on vinyl so let me jump on quickly! I also think its fair to say that if it wasn’t for him, I might not of got to where I got to so quickly!
Some of your best highlights from 2015?
Playing Magna Carta on New Years Day then gaining a set & residency at Abode is probably the most exciting stuff thats happened so far in my DJ career! Playing on the terrace every other month to 2,000 – 3,000 people has got to be my highlight!
What you are most looking forward to in your 2016 schedule?
The parties we have lined up with Abode and of course the festivals we have. None that I can mention but very exciting! Ibiza is in the talks too for 2016 so fingers crossed!
Your top 3 tracks to play in your sets? And why?
Im loving PAWSA right now, he’s music has everything I think a track needs! Grooving baselines, the kicks, wicked vocal samples and I feel that his music really gets me going, which means If I’m going the crowd are too!
A favourite of mine is ‘Muon’. Huracan by Simon Liberali is also a great track! I used to play a different version when I first started playing, so buzzing I play a newer version which is even better!
Last but not least, has to be Matt Mclarrie – Tickly Voodoo. Ive played it twice on the terrace at Studio 338 for Abode & the crowd go nuts for it! It has a massive break in that builds up so the drop is decent!
What do you hope to happen for your musical career in the next 3 years?
Global. I want to play all over the world to thousands of people alongside other huge artist that I’m inspired by! Playing in my favourite club in Berlin, Watergate would also be a dream!
