An Interview With The Golden Boy

A few weeks back we caught up with The Golden Boy, a name which is massively on the rise in the scene, and for 2017 he’s released music on record labels such as Emerald City, Repopulate Mars, Toolroom Records, Sola plus more.

He also featured a special mini-mix for Annie Mac on her evening time Radio1 show.

How did you go about calling yourself The Golden Boy?

Bit of a random one, there’s some wicked street art in Birmingham with the words the golden boy underneath it. I thought it would make a cool alias at the time and its stuck and I’ve used it ever since. Interesting sometimes when the promoter books your hotel under your DJ name!

How is the rest of the year looking like your own releases?

We have a few locked in that I can talk about. Firstly have a wicked 2 track ep forthcoming on iVav. Which is the sister label to VIVa Music (Steve Lawler). Really excited to show everyone that one. Got a track knocking around on The Deepshakerz Safe Music which is currently exclusive to Traxsource but out on Beatport this week! And finally a big track for next year that we’ve just signed to a wicked label but its too early to tell!

What was your first track signing?

First major ep was signed to Ministry Of Sound’s sister label HK Records. Did ok on Beatport and got a spin from MK!

When not working on music what do you get up to in your spare time?

Just bought the new FIFA and its currently occupying a lot of my time! Other than that music is my main passion and I try and immerse myself in it as much as possible.

If you could work with any artist in the world, of any genre, who would it be and why them?

Someone old school like Harry Romero or Carl Craig. I’m massively influenced by house and techno from their era!

How long have you been a producer/DJ for and how did it all start?

I’ve been making music for as long as I can remember but never really delved into electronic music until I went to university. Being in Birmingham opened my eyes up to a completed different world of music.

What’s your next goal for yourself?

Id love to play The Warehouse Project or one of the super clubs in Ibiza. Basically to places where I used to go raving!

After a gig, you likely to go home or carry on partying?

Love a good afterparty!

You’ve recently been featured on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show… tell us about this…

Was asked to do a mini mix last month by Annie and it was a real turning point in my career. Was honoured to be involved as I’ve been an avid listener to the show and the mini mix.

Egyptian Lover was released earlier in the year Lee Foss’ & Jamie Jones’ label ‘Emerald City’. What was the process to getting this signed?

My management hit up Jamie & Lee’s team as we thought Egyptian Lover could be up their street. After road testing, Jamie came back and said he wanted it for Emerald City. Rest is history. Latmun killed his remix and really made the package what it became!
