An Interview With Luca M

A few weeks back we caught up with Luca M, to talk about whats coming up with his own productions, how he got into underground music, what is style is when he performs plus more…

Let’s start by talking about what you have coming up with your own releases?

Hello! I didn’t have time lately to make music as I was super busy last summer with my wedding preparations so I had to put music on the second plan. Now I’m back in business with fresh powers, so, to answer straight to your question, I have an EP to come out with my mate Draganeskool on Simone Vitullo’s imprint Basica Recordings and also a remix with my brother JUST2 for Ray Okpara, which will be released at the end of the year. I have an album in progress with JUST2 as well. We don’t know yet when it will be released.

How long have you been producing music for and would you say your sound has changed at all over the years?

I’ve been producing since 2009 and yes, my sound has changed in a better way, I hope! Music is evolving year by year. At the beginning I used to make beats similar to the iberic sound, with chopped vocals, now I like to make music a bit dark but groovy at the same time. It’s not a big change, but I can feel it.

Who was the first DJ you went to see perform and did this inspire you?

Hmm, I can’t remember who was the first DJ I saw perform to be fair. It didn’t actually make me want to actually start DJing. Usually, the order is to first become a DJ, then start producing beats.

My situation was the opposite. I started as a producer, I got a lot of DJ requests which at the start I used to decline, as I only wished to make beats instead of playing. Then I realized that its a shame turning down the gigs. It was a perfect job for me in the earlies 20s and it still is!

When you DJ, how would you describe your sound in your sets?

I can describe it as a happy and a groovy sound. I also like to alternate between the darker sounds, with the techier vibes too. I don’t like to play a linear and boring sound, I just prefer the opposite. But it depends so much on the crowd, I adapt to their needs.

Whats your plans for the rest of the year with your DJ bookings?

My next gigs are with Matthias Tanzmann and Tube & Berger at Database, one of the best clubs in Romania. Also with Mendo at Kristal Club in Bucharest. All these gigs are until the holidays. Might be weird, but I don’t like to play over Christmas and NYE. I want to spend that wonderful time with my wife, family and friends.

Would you consider starting up your own record label ever in the future?

To be honest, no, I don’t want to. I just need to focus all my strength on music productions and gigs.
