Cowlin Presents: Latmun

We welcome Latmun to the interview series…

He’s a name that is definitely on the rise in the underground scene especially with his recent EP on Viva Music which reached 4th in the tech house charts.

We had a chat about what he’s been up to recently with his productions, how the link up took place with Viva Music, how he started producing plus more…

Lets start with talking about what’s been happening for your productions in the last 2 months?

I will have to go back a little further than 2 months to tell the full story of whats happened recently.. So back at the end of summer last year I released a track on the VIVa Music Season 4 compilation. I was so overwhelmed with the response to this that and so appreciative that people were enjoying it.

Having the good feedback and seeing people enjoy the release then inspired me to write a 6 track EP which was released on VIVa in January. I could never imagined how far the title track ‘Def‘ would reach. It achieved 14th in the top 100 Tech House Tracks on Beatport and the EP reached 4th in the Top 100 Releases. I cannot say thanks enough to everyone who has supported my music so far, and particularly this EP.

How did the link up take place with you and VIVA Music?

This was through Detlef supporting my music, I kept sending it to him and then we eventually worked out an EP on VIVa from the tracks.

How did you decide you were going to be a DJ?

I always loved music, especially being involved in the production side of it in some form. It initially stemmed from helping out with the sound engineering at secondary school theatre productions, which had the added bonus of meaning I didn’t have to act in them as well!

I then went on to discover my love for electronic music after being addicted to Leftfield’s ‘Leftism’ album when I first heard it. I also blew my first pair of speakers listening to that album on full volume!

The actual moment I decided I was going to give full time DJing a chance of being my career was when I was going through the process of applying for grad jobs in my final year of Uni. I just didn’t have any passion for anything that I was applying for, so I knew it wasn’t the right choice.

What were your first steps for you to the production route?

My first venture into trying to produce some form of music was by installing some free software that came with a Kellogg’s cereal packet called ‘eJay’. The software was complete crap, as was what I made! But it got me hooked either way.

Name a track you have produced which is your favourite and why this track?

My favourite production that I have made is ‘Rock The Beat’. I’m really happy with the rolling feel of the track, while still keeping it really high energy. When the synth comes in on the drop I think its a really satisfying release of the energy after the build up.

What can we expect to hear from you for this year?

I have a remix coming out on Resonance in April, an EP coming out on Mar-T’s WOW! Recordings in May and then another EP on Lost Records in June. I also have a remix on Roush in June.

What DJs have been supporting your music?

Want to use this space to say huge thanks to Detlef who has supported my music since really early on and sorted out my VIVa release, aside of being my favourite producer out there he is also the nicest guy and always has me in fits of laughter!

Ive also had support from Denney, Nathan Barato, Skream, Claptone, Waifs & Strays, Hot Since 82, Steve Lawler plus others. But also very importantly all the resident DJ’s at the clubs who have been supporting my music, thanks to them!

Whats your favourite venue you have performed at?

I want to change this question slightly to firstly instead talk about my favourite crowd I have recently played to. Theres a wicked little party up in Darlington called Solar Knights, they have had years of quality bookings and I had the pleasure of joining that list a couple of weeks ago.

Its held in a small room in the back end of town and the crowd was so good, fully engaged for the whole 2 hour set and allowing themselves to go on the journey with the music. I could have happily played another 6 hours!

My favourite venue has to be Cosmic Ballroom in Newcastle. It sounds so good being stood on top of those Void subs in the booth, and its the perfect size and 300-400 people.
