Lee Walker is an artist originating from Middlesbrough who has stepped into the underground scene with a bang. Most known for his remix of DJ Deeon’s ‘Freak Like Me‘ which is now sat at number 1 on the Beatport charts!!

As well Walker’s other productions and his ability to control crowds when he performs, he is a name everyone will be hearing of in 2016.

How does it feel now that your remix is sat at number 1 on the Beatport charts?

Being at number one is awesome to be fair! With every release you always check the top 100 optimistically and often don’t even hit it in the low numbers. To check this one a single day after release and seeing it enter at 29 was quality, then inside a week see it rise all the way up to the overall number one is just mental.

I’m looking forward to my top of the pops appearance! Ive got a wicked disco suit lined up and can’t wait to mime being on the decks, it’s the dream!

On a serious note I would like to thank every single person who’s ever sent me a message of encouragement, a comment, share, like on videos and to the people who are buying the track! It means the world to a DJ/Producer to finally get that break and it’s all because of the people who’ve supported me and kept their interest instead of looking for zippyshare links and getting YouTube rips. Good hustle people, good hustle.

Lets start by telling the readers how the process of your ‘Freak Like Me’ remix become worldwide?

Well, I sent this to Marco Carola in an email on a punt (its not exactly his usual style, bit of a chancer) then had to remove it from SoundCloud. I thought it was done and dusted and swept under the carpet. Then I receive a video from a friend asking me if this was my edit. Amnesia, Ibiza main room, Music On, 8am, Marco Carola. It was my edit and the place went bat shit, love anything like that!

What would you class your style as when producing music?

To be honest I can be a bit of a mixed bag it depends what I feel like doing on any given day. I would lean more towards the tech house/techno side of things going forward. That’s the stuff I’m really into, labels like Desolat, TANSTAAFL and so on…

What established DJs have been playing your ‘Freak Like Me’ remix?

It’s been a really weird mixed bag of support to be fair right across the spectrum. There’s been people like Marco Carola, Dixon, Loco Dice, Eats EverythingDisclosure plus a list of other well established artists… Its spanned a lot of different genres from the underground scene right up to the commercial side of things. Not forgetting the Radio 1 support from Pete Tong, Annie Mac, Mistajam & Danny Howard. Its been mental to be fair!

What motivates you when you get into the studio?

Red Bull for a start. Musically I just like opening up the DAW and messing about with stuff until I get something I like. I really enjoy the stage where you’re just putting a little groove together with your percussion and a bass line and so on. If I think I’m onto a winner that’s when I’ll get excited and push forward with it. There is so much discarded stuff sitting on my computer at the minute…

What do your 2016 Ibiza plans consist of?

There’s still more to be confirmed, but so far I have 3 shows at Sankeys, Ibiza including the opening and a show at Zoo Project. For now that’s all that’s confirmed but we will see if more comes up, but Sankeys will be my mainstay on the island this season.

What can we expect from your music productions in the next coming months?

This is a weird one that might confuse a few people. I’m sure people are just expecting me to knock out garage banger after garage banger but in all honesty, that’s not really what I’m about. There’s gonna be a lot more moody tech house and techno coming out from me. Really starting to move back towards the stuff I’ve dedicated so much time to doing.

There’s stuff coming out on Draft, Straight Ahead Music (vinyl) & Wiggle as well as some other big labels that I can’t announce just yet but are really exciting for me!

When producing music… Whats your first steps when you start a new track?

Kick and bassline, always. I really like just getting the bottom end groove right in a track. It seems to be the most important thing when it comes to playing them out to the venue. Then I’ll just start building percussion up and everything else flows from there.
